Disabled Man Safely Rescued After Roof Collapse During Hurricane Melissa

Thanks to the swift coordination of national agencies and humanitarian partners.

Montego Bay, Jamaica — A disabled man was safely rescued today after his home’s roof collapsed during the passage of Hurricane Melissa, thanks to the swift and coordinated response of The Crisis Support Charity, Noel Phillips, and the Jamaica Fire Department, with crucial support from the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) and Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The dramatic rescue unfolded after emergency teams were alerted that the man, who lives alone and has no arms, was trapped inside his damaged home amid heavy rain and strong winds. Within minutes, a coordinated emergency response was activated, led by The Crisis Support Charity and journalist Noel Phillips, who worked closely with the Fire Department, JDF, and JCF to reach the location safely.

The operation was further bolstered by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr, and Permanent Secretary Dione Jennings, who personally intervened to prioritize the rescue as part of the Ministry’s ongoing disaster response for vulnerable citizens.

“This rescue highlights what can be achieved when compassion, coordination, and community come together,” said Luke Josephs – Co-Founder of The Crisis Support Charity. “Our priority was saving a life, and we are deeply grateful to all agencies and individuals who acted with urgency and care.”

As we continue to navigate the impact that Hurricane Melissa had on communities across Jamaica, The Crisis Support Charity urges citizens to check on vulnerable neighbors, and support ongoing relief efforts to ensure no one is left behind.
