In an emotional and powerful speech that resonated with the guests alike, President of the University of Technology (UTech), Dr. Kevin Brown, shared a deeply personal story from his childhood—an accident that left him with severe burns on half of his face and changed the course of his life forever.
Speaking at the launch of the Burn Foundation of Jamaica and The Crisis Support Charity held at the AC Hotel Kingston, Dr. Brown recounted the traumatic incident that occurred when he was just a young boy living in Grange Hill, Westmoreland. “A pot of boiling water accidentally fell and splashed across one side of my face,” Dr. Brown revealed to a captivated audience. “It was a moment of confusion, pain, and fear—not just for me, but for my mother, who had nowhere to turn.”
At the time of the accident, there was no dedicated burn unit in Savanna-la-Mar, nor was there a burn foundation or emergency response support system to guide families in crisis. “My mother had to rely on sheer instinct, faith, and limited medical resources to help me survive,” he said, his voice cracking with emotion. “There was no Burn Foundation to call, no organization to give her answers, no specialist on standby.”
Dr. Brown described the long road to recovery—not just physically, but emotionally and socially. He spoke openly about the isolation and bullying he experienced, the questions he faced, and the strength it took to reclaim his confidence and pursue his dreams.
